THE BIG HOT ONE
BOSTON 2004
April 19, 2004, Boston, MA - We woke up to a glorious, overcast, foggy, 48 degrees in Boston, near the Boston Commons where the school buses lined up to take the Pilgrimage Track Club and thousands of other runners to Hopkinton for the start of the 108th Boston Marathon. Surely the weather man had it wrong. Surely it would not reach even the 70s on such a perfect day.....
When we arrived in Hopkinton at nearing 10 a.m., it was already sunny and comfortable. That is a very bad sign. It is good to be cold this early before the marathon. The start of the race was 85 degrees and it stayed that way even into the city where is normally drops in temperature. It was in a word, BRUTAL. I have never hurt so badly in any running event in my life. My sub-three hour Boston streak was over. All of the Pilgrims had a grim day, some more than others.....

Pilgrims with happy looks ready for battle - the unkown factor - how hot would it get? Jerry Hickey, Jeff Haushalter, Joel Lyons, Brenda Walton, B. Cordts. photo by Cookie Cordts

RESPONSE FROM BAA AS TO CHIP TIMING PROBLEM
We did experience some technical problems at the start line which resulting in missing some start times. Each of these runners have been identified and a net time has been determined based on the median start time for their assigned corral. Each runner will receive this revised information by postcard within the next few days. The correction is now reflected on the BAA website. Please review the results and if you have any questions please contact the BAA office in Hopkinton. Thank you.

Subject: Chip time 2003
BAA:My bib number was 1750 for 2003 race. The reported results show my time same for gun time and chip time - which is not accurate. I was at least 20 seconds off the line in bin number 1 by my watch as I was near the back of the bin. Any explanation for this? The official time is accurate, the chip time is off. Thanks - and thanks again for the greatest race on earth.Bradley J. Cordts

Steps to get into the greatest race on earth and then to excel
First, you must qualify. Please do not buy a number from the AMA or get a charity number. That is in a way cheating those who work hard to do it right. There are lots of group hugs, and these standards aren't that bad if you train. It is not supposed to be easy. This is the Super Bowl of running!

Chose a marathon that will yield a good time. Pay attention to your race selection. Get yourself into Chicago. They count the chip time, so you can even start in the back and have fun passing everyone over the course of 26.2 miles. Remember: the race is only half over at 20 miles. Make sure you train, and get it in early in the fall but after October 1 since that gets you into two years of Boston Marathons. Then you will have all winter to get ready for Boston and in case something happens, you have a second shot in the bank for the next year.
Learn the race history. Go right now and order Tom Derderian's book Boston Marathon Centennial Edition published by Human Kinetics. 1-800-747-4457. This book will get you through 1995, but it is so rich in detail and description, that you will be able to build ably on your knowledge of the race.
More details coming.... watch here.

FUN BOSTON FACTS
From: "A History of Fenway Park"
Though generations have come and gone, Fenway Park remains, much like it did the
day it opened on April 20, 1912. The home of the Boston Red Sox resounds with
the echoes of great baseball players: Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Jimmy Collins, Duffy
Lewis, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, Ted
Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski, to name just
a few.
Fenway Park is actually the second home for the Sox. In 1901, the
Boston Pilgrims became one of the charter members of the fledgling American League. The Pilgrims played ball at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, now a part of Northeastern University's campus.Boston Globe owner General Charles Henry Taylor, a Civil War veteran, bought the team for his son John I. Taylor in 1904. In 1907, owner Taylor changed the club's name from the Pilgrims to the Red Sox. In 1910, tired of the leasing arrangement for the Huntington Avenue Grounds, Taylor made a big announcement: he would build a new ballpark for his Red Sox. Taylor dubbed the new ballpark Fenway Park because of its location in the Fenway section of Boston.
ROCKET ROD

Photo by Cookie Cordts (c) 2001
Rod DeHaven holds off South Africa's Laban Nkete to finish 6th in 2:12:41 and as first American at Boston 2001. DeHaven then went on to Chicago on October 7, 2001, to knock a minute off his PR to finish 6th (1st American) there as well in 2:11:40. Will Boston 2002 play into Rod's plans? Rod lost his Germantown Half Marathon record in 2002; will he make an appearance at the 2003 Germantown Half Marathon to set things straight?
