ELS - Explosive Leg Speed

I have been talking about ELS for a long time.  Suddenly, I found my self sitting in the Border's Book Store, drinking coffee, and wondering what it was all about.  I spotted a book - EXPLOSIVE RUNNING by Dr. Michael Yessis, Ph.D.  He has talked with some top runners and formulated a scientific version of what I have been spouting for a long a time.

" You are on the starting line.  Do you wish to attack the run and do better than ever, or would you rather continue to run the same old way and achieve the same old results?  Your success or failure is up to you!  If you follow the recommendations given in this book, I guarantee you will see outstanding results."  - Dr. Michael Yessis, Ph.D.

Rusty's Secret Treadmill Training Program

I spent a lot of time on the treadmill to get ready for my last three marathons.  I find that the control of the pace and the relatively soft surface enhances my training, especially in light of the fact that I substitute what I call junk runs for the treadmill runs.  I find that I run the treadmill like a cut down. I start very slow, but by the end I am usually trying to beat some goal either pace or mileage or both.  Christine Cordts uses her IPod on the treadmill to make the time go by. I have done this on occasion, but I find I can concentrate with the feed back from the machine.  In Barcelona our hotel had fancy treadmills with touch screen TVs tuned to CNBC Europe - the time flew and I got caught up on the stock news.  Rod DeHaven was a big treadmill guy.  He used Jack Daniel's suggestion of jacking up the back to simulate downhill running.  Kim Jones was a big treadmill runner, and she claimed she did a majority of her running on them.  It certainly has its place in my routine, and I will continue to use it as an key ingredient to future training.
